Luc Pillot makes the perfect start in a perfect Douarnenez….

30 Dragons raced yesterday in the beautiful sunny bay of Douarnenez for the Open French National Championship Title of 2012. With a 10-12kt wind from around 290 degree’s the PRO had no problems getting the fleet away for two races, as the forecast for today looks like having no wind…  Both races were won by Luc Pillot helming “Lady Jane” crewed by Jean Claude Danet and Francois Abiven who simply sailed faster than anyone else..  Past Olympic Medalist (1988) Luc had to keep a watchful eye on POR 55 Jose’ Matoso in race one as the two boats were quite close together for most of the race. Jose’ with his Olympian tactician Gustavo Lima, sailed a good solid race to hold onto their 2nd place. Rus 6 had been always up in the mix, but was unfortunately OCS so did not record a finish. So it was Martin Payne sailing Louis Urvois’ beautiful cold molded “Ar Youleg II” who took 3rd place (crewed by the newly famous Bakker Boy’s from the Netherlands) 🙂

In race two Luc managed to obtain a large gain from the right-hand-side of the first beat and was never challenged despite the good efforts of La Baule’s Jean Guillard FRA 403 who held onto 2nd place in these two up-wind and two down-wind courses. In 3rd place was FRA 405 Baboo helming “Vol de Nuit” from Arcachon….  The fleet once ashore had copious amounts of Sardines and Salad washed down by complimentary wine and beer back at the local hosting Societe’ des Regates de Douarnenez Yacht Club……

Today the wind may be much lighter, but with much stronger winds forecast for both Friday and Saturday there will be no problem for the PRO to complete a full programme of races. This is particularly important as with the Gold Cup here next year 2013 during these same dates in August, most of the participants from a whole host of countries are using this regatta as their warm up event getting used to the conditions that will differ from May when we all normally sail the Douarnenez Grand Prix…..

Higher, Faster, Longer………….   Stavros.  (FRA 365).
