Old rivals neck and neck at the Prince Philip Cup

Prince Philip Cup - Australian Dragon Championships at Metung

Day one of the Prince Philip Cup in Metung was overcast with some black clouds roaming around the Gippsland Lakes. A tough day at the office for some! Generally Southerly breeze building to 20 knots and a lumpy sea. Away on the first start with 3 boats OCS. A two lap course with downwind finish. It paid to work the right of the course in the darkening skies.

GBR600 (Penny Farthing) skippered by Rob Campbell was first to the top mark closely followed by NZL 7 (Wild Rose) Tim Smith and AUS193 (Adios) Graham Aldersea. The breeze had shifted so a gybe set paid and gave Penny Farthing a bigger margin. Challenging conditions with plenty of breeze for the downhill run and the next lap. Penny Farthing led the whole way around with Wild Rose and Adios 2nd & 3rd. Matt Whitnall, a previous PPC winner sailing a charter boat (Magic) was 4th. Merum, an older boat from the Freshie fleet (Royal Freshwater Bay YC) now re located to Metung, was 5th sailed by a team from Norway. Gordon Ingate’s Whisical came in 7th.

In between races there were 2 sailors overboard from local boat Terence Grundy’s (Allegra) – which has also relocated to Metung from Freshie, so a few dramas across the course.

Race 2 saw the breeze starting to moderate slightly. A longer beat was set but still 2 laps with downwind finish. Middle and right seemed to pay with Whimsical coming out on top at the first mark, followed by Adios then a close bunch including Penny Farthing, Wild Rose, Sandy Anderson’s (Riga), Robin Hammond’s (Linnea) and Ray Chatfield's (Wizzardry) all representing RFBYC. It was a close fought run between Whimsical and Graham Adios who split at the bottom gate. A testing 2nd beat with lighter patches developed and a remaining lumpy sea. Whimsical prevailed to have a clear lead at the top mark. Followed by Adios with Riga close behind, then Penny Farthing and Wild Rose. And those were the finishing positions Whimsical, Adios with Riga just holding onto 3rd by 1 second from a fast finishing Penny Farthing.

The whole of Metung were behind Graham Aldersea’s Adios lll as the local boat who had a very consistent day. Rob Campbell & Graham Aldersea were tied on 5 points at the end of day 1.

Day 2 and the sun was out and the wind ranging from 12 – 15 knots. A great day for Dragon sailing. The top mark was set quite close to the shore resulting in a very shifty last 300m into the mark. Gordon Ingate’s Whisical stamped their authority on the day leading all the way around. Sandy Anderson’s Riga made a great comeback by going right on the last beat as did Graham Aldersea in Adios. Damian Daniel’s Imagination was up there at the end and the finishing positions were Whimsical, Imagination, Riga, Adios and Penny Farthing.

The second race of the day was longer with 2 laps and a beat to the finish. A slight wind slight change to 110 degrees and the top mark was brought back from the shore a little. Left hand side paid and Penny Farthing came out on top closely pursued by Adios, Riga and Shapes (Geoff Totterdell having a better day). A nerve wracking day for Penny Farthing who held onto the lead despite a late charge from Whisical who went to the right of the course and nearly came out on top. Penny Farthing crossed ahead on the last beat and held them off but a late couple of tacks from Riga saw them get the better shift to finish 2nd with Whimsical in 3rd. Adios lll & Shapes were a dead heat on the line for 4th

So all to race for tomorrow when the discard will be brought into play. Racing has been brought forward to the lay day due to strong winds being forecast for Friday.
