USA231 'Williwaw', the boat that won the gold sailing for the US in 1968, is being brought to Texas, to the home of Kevin Durkin, so that she may be retored to her former glory.
Kevin and his family are just finishing up the restoration of another well known North American Dragon ('Weetamoe') and have decided to take on this project as well. This is great news for the class in the US. 'Williwaw' had been on the west coast in California for quite some time, and had sadly fallen into neglect. Kevin is planning to restore her so that she can not only be sailed again, but raced with the North American fleet.
This boat is of historical significance not only for it's win in the Olympic Games, but because it was one of two boats to be rigged for those games by the Harken brothers, their first foray into the sailboat rigging business. We have contacted Harken about this project and hope that they will wish to be involved in the restoration. We have also contacted Wooden Boat magazine here in the US and hope that they will be interested enough to mention this in their publication. The publicity would be great for the class and would especially be encouraging to those many owners of wooden Dragons that we are hoping will undertake similiar restorations and come out to join us on the water in time.
