Hungarian and Austrian fleets join for two-round event on Traunsee and Balaton

The Austrian and Hungarian fleets decided to make their separate events more appealing for their Dragon sailors by combining them. The idea was born at a dinner at the Johan Anker Cup in Balatonkenese, Hungary last year. The President of the wonderful Union Yacht Club Traunsee in Austria, and Dragon sailor himself, Thomas Puxkandl, offered a trophy for the best of the teams who would sail two events, one on Traunsee and one on Balaton the following year.

Vilmos Naray, Chairman of the Hungarian Dragon Association said: "This is a very smart plan, as the two fleets are relatively small on their own. We hope that the Pannonia-Alpen Cup will attract a lot of Dragons not only from Austria and Hungary, but also from Southern Germany. Balatonfüred is hosting the Europeans next year, so the 2nd round of the event in Balatonfüred is a perfect opportunity to test the venue. And why not come for the first round to Austria, to Traunsee, one of the most beautiful lakes in Upper Austria."

The first round is taking place on June 10th – 11th in Gmunden, organized by the Union Yacht Club Traunsee. "We expect some 5 boats from Hungary and up to 15 boats from Austria, which will make this event a real success", Thomas said.

The two fleets are also bringing their own strengths to the social events. Friday night an Austrian-Hungarian evening is planned with Hungarian wines and Austrian beers, and the club is hosting a dinner on Saturday.

The second round of the event, the Johan Anker Cup, will be held from September 14th through 17th in Balatonfüred, the venue for the Europeans next year. Those helmsmen who participate in both events will compete for the Pannonia-Alpen Cup, which will be awarded to the helmsman with the lowest scores from both events.

The Notice of Race for the Traunsee event can be found on the club's website, where you can now register online.
